Background of the study
Financial independence among youth is a critical determinant of economic stability and personal development. In Oyun Local Government Area, Kwara State, vocational education has been increasingly promoted as a means to achieve financial independence among secondary school graduates. By providing specialized training in areas such as accounting, business management, and technical skills, vocational education equips graduates with the competencies necessary to start their own businesses or secure stable employment (Ibrahim, 2023). This educational approach not only fosters self-reliance but also contributes to broader economic growth by creating a cadre of skilled professionals capable of driving local enterprise development. The focus on practical skills in vocational education has gained traction, especially in regions where traditional academic pathways have not adequately prepared students for the complexities of the modern economy. However, challenges such as outdated curricula, limited funding, and insufficient industry linkages continue to undermine the full potential of vocational education in promoting financial independence (Ibrahim, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024). These challenges create a disconnect between the training provided and the actual needs of the labor market, leaving many graduates ill-equipped to navigate the financial demands of independence. Additionally, socio-cultural factors and economic disparities further complicate the situation, as students from disadvantaged backgrounds may not have access to the same quality of vocational training as their more affluent counterparts. This study examines the extent to which vocational education influences financial independence among secondary school graduates in Oyun, considering both the direct benefits of skill acquisition and the broader socio-economic context. By integrating theoretical perspectives with empirical evidence, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how vocational education can serve as a catalyst for economic empowerment and financial self-sufficiency (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of vocational education in fostering financial independence, secondary school graduates in Oyun Local Government Area face significant obstacles in translating acquired skills into sustainable income-generating opportunities. The primary issue is the misalignment between the skills taught in vocational programs and the evolving needs of the local economy. Many graduates find themselves inadequately prepared for the competitive job market due to outdated curricula and limited practical exposure (Nwankwo, 2024). This deficiency often results in underemployment, where graduates are unable to secure positions that fully utilize their vocational training. Additionally, the lack of effective mentorship and career guidance further diminishes the prospects for financial independence among these graduates. Socio-economic disparities also play a critical role; students from less affluent backgrounds may lack the necessary support systems to leverage their vocational skills into successful business ventures or stable employment. Moreover, insufficient collaboration between vocational institutions and local industries results in a gap between training outcomes and market requirements. These factors collectively contribute to a cycle of financial dependency that hinders the overall economic progress of the region. There is an urgent need to investigate these challenges and develop targeted interventions that can better align vocational education with the demands of the local economy. This study seeks to explore these issues in depth, with the goal of providing actionable recommendations to enhance the role of vocational education in promoting financial independence among secondary school graduates in Oyun (Nwankwo, 2024).
